Do you have a student in Texas in Grades 3-12 who is an English Language Learner, in an English as a Second Language program, or considered an Emerging Bilingual student?
If so, your student will be taking the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) exam as well as the STAAR exam.
TELPAS is an English language proficiency assessment aligned to the Texas English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). This exam is designed to assess the progress that emergent bilingual (EB) students make in learning the English language.
The TELPAS assesses emerging bilingual students in four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Each component helps educators evaluate the language proficiency of ELLs, guiding instruction and support for improving their English skills across reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
TELPAS Tutoring through STAAR Up Texas Online Courses will be available Monday, January 6, 2025.
TELPAS Reading assesses how well English language learners (ELLs) can understand written English. Students are tested on their ability to comprehend various texts, including short passages, literature, and informational content. The test evaluates their skills in recognizing main ideas, supporting details, and making inferences from the reading material.
TELPAS Writing measures how well English language learners can express themselves in writing in English. Students are tasked with composing responses to prompts that demonstrate their ability to organize ideas, use correct grammar, and apply vocabulary appropriately. This assessment helps gauge writing proficiency across different types of texts, including narratives and informational writing.
TELPAS Listening evaluates how well students understand spoken English in a variety of contexts. The assessment includes listening to audio recordings of conversations, lectures, and other spoken materials, and responding to questions that test comprehension. This test measures the ability to understand language used in everyday communication as well as academic settings.
TELPAS Speaking measures how well English language learners can communicate orally in English. During the assessment, students are asked to respond to questions or engage in conversations that demonstrate their ability to use spoken English clearly and appropriately. The test assesses fluency, pronunciation, and the ability to express ideas in real-time conversations.
